Commentary

Paul Victor Lebas exhibited from 1852-1876 at the Paris Salon specialising in portraits of the Bonaparte dynasty, including Napoleon Ⅲ and the Empress Eugenie. The goddess Juno is portrayed majestically be jewelled with tiara, triple drop earrings and necklace. The quality of the cameo cutting of the transparent monochrome garnet is brought out by the contrast of matt and polished surfaces, and the beauty of the purple colour emphasised by the pearl and diamond frame. Juno in this portrait is the epitome of queenly dignity, as was appropriate for the wife of Jupiter.
